Gabriela, Gabriela. DRAMA. TRANSLATION.

GABRIELA, GABRIELA

By Aurelio Solver Agcaoili/
Madrid, March 2014

Note: Lyrics for the songs have been adjusted, cut appropriately to follow the appropriate song in Les Miserables. But you can do improvs, depending on the stageability. I am going to mark the spots/places where recitation is done, otherwise, most of the lyrics are sung. CREATE A WAR-LIKE AMBIENCE AT THE RIGHT PLACES, WITH DRUMS BEATING. THE MUSICAL SCORING CAN BE RIPPED OFF FROM YOU TUBE, WITHOUT THE LYRICS.]

Performance by iLAING 2015; first performd by The Ilokano Classes, Waipahu High May 2014, School, 2014

VOICE OVER NARRATIONS:
A STRONG MALE VOICE, THE BEST OF YOUR ADVANCED STUDENT. A STRONG VOICE OVER FEMALE VOICE FOR THE ENGLISH.

Male--- [Music, Les Miserables, fades in]

Gagayyem ken kakabsat, iparangmi kadakayo ti pakasaritaan ni Gabriela Silang, ti kasimpungalan ni Diego Silang, ti ama ti revolusion nga Ilokano ken Amianan.

Ni diego silang, maysa a bannuar iti amianan, ti nangideklara ti pannakaipundar ti nasion nga ilokano idi siglo disisiete. Daytoy nga aramid ket kas deklarasion ti wayawaya ti amianan iti panangsakop ti espaƱa iti filipinas.

Idi maipatli ni Diego Silang, intultuloy ni gabriela ti dangadang agingga nga isu mismo ket pinatay dagiti kastila.

Female--
Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you the story of Gabriela Silang, the spouse of Diego Silang, the father of the Ilokano and Amianan Revolution.

Diego Silang, the here of the north, declared the founding of the Ilokano nation during the 17th century philippines. This is a declaration of the freedom of the Ilokano and Amianan peoples from the colonization of the Spain.

When Diego was killed, Gabriela Silang picked up the work of waging war against the Spaniards until the enemy killed her.

SCENE 1. INVOLVES ALL SIX GROUPS.  Summary: the Ilokano people becomes aware of all the abuses heaped upon them by two hundred years of Spanish colonization. This is a wake-up call for them to rise up even as other people in the entire country were also rising up against the Spaniards. Diego Silang, an acclaimed leader, had known the evils ways of colonizers for a long time; his wife, Gabriela Silang joins him in the resistance.

REVOLUTION BREAKS ---- scene for all classes: to the stage, in rumbunctious, rally/demonstration mood; voice starts soft, gets louder, goes crescendo, and bang! Each group will sing its portion of the opening scene.

[Directorial note: check blocking so everyone goes on stage, then moves out of the stage to leave GROUP 1 behind after having gone through the finale of scene 1, with the choral rendition of ALL this scene.

The ALL in the group singing is sung while all groups exits stages, singing fading out in the distance, with only Group 1 left behind.

[Directorial notes: To the tune of, ‘Do you hear the people sing?/Les Miserables.’ Each group enters, each singing his portion of the entrance. And then then ALL, FOR ALL sig groups in the finale to open the performance.]

Directors notes: All cast sing this song in the background, while on the backstage, and then each group will enter the stage one by one. When each group enters, other groups stop singing. ONLY the group entering the stage will sing, and then ALL will sing when everybody has gotten at the stage, full blocking, and in the ALL portion of this scene. The same is repeated for the FINAL SCENE, eith each group entering except Group 6 who is already on the stage, thus, joined in by Groups 1 to 5 (for this FINAL SCENE). Scene is revolutionary, rowdy, natural, not lined, but students must know their proper blocking, please!
