The other side of the narrative we call 'Thanksgiving'.

BAYANGGUDAW NOTES. 24 NOV 2016. THUR. N1.
The other side of the narrative we call 'Thanksgiving'.
EARLIER while serving as editor-in-chief of a newspaper in Los Angeles and another newspaper in Honolulu, I raised this issue about the 'other side' of the American narrative we call 'Thanksgiving'.
I raised the issue of murder and genocide, the Christian concept of 'real estate' (a carryover of the feudalistic roots of Christianity and in particular, the Holy Roman Catholic Church's penchant for turning everyone into Christ-believer with a string attached), and that idea of 'Thanksgiving for us' but not exactly 'Thanksgiving for all of us'.
There is this narrative of exclusiveness in this new, mythic American narrative: It our Thanksgiving, but not yours.
The writer Richard Greener (2010) has recently written about this, and he retells of the context of why we must get past the myth of what we are thanking for, why the turkey has to be sacrificed, and why we need to gather and thank God.
Here, in quote-unquote:
"The idea of the American Thanksgiving feast is a fairly recent fiction. The idyllic partnership of 17th Century European Pilgrims and New England Indians sharing a celebratory meal appears to be less than 120 years-old. And it was only after the First World War that a version of such a Puritan-Indian partnership took hold in elementary schools across the American landscape. We can thank the invention of textbooks and their mass purchase by public schools for embedding this “Thanksgiving” image in our modern minds. It was, of course, a complete invention, a cleverly created slice of cultural propaganda, just another in a long line of inspired nationalistic myths.
""The first Thanksgiving Day did occur in the year 1637, but it was nothing like our Thanksgiving today. On that day the Massachusetts Colony Governor, John Winthrop, proclaimed such a “Thanksgiving” to celebrate the safe return of a band of heavily armed hunters, all colonial volunteers. They had just returned from their journey to what is now Mystic, Connecticut where they massacred 700 Pequot Indians. Seven hundred Indians - men, women and children - all murdered.
This day is still remembered today, 373 years later. No, it’s been long forgotten by white people, by European Christians. But it is still fresh in the mind of many Indians. A group calling themselves the United American Indians of New England meet each year at Plymouth Rock on Cole’s Hill for what they say is a Day of Mourning. They gather at the feet of a stature of Chief Massasoit of the Wampanoag to remember the long gone Pequot. They do not call it Thanksgiving. There is no football game afterward." Vote recount, Thanksgiving for the right reasons, and the quest for what is right.

BAYANGGUDAW NOTES. 24 NOV 2016. THUR. N2.
Vote recount, Thanksgiving for the right reasons, and the quest for what is right.
REUTERS came in with the latest--just an hour ago--about Green Party's position of filing for a petition for a vote recount.
It appears that some possible hacking could have happened in some voting places representing three states based on some expert analyses of those in the know about these information science things I barely understand. I leave to 'em, the experts.
If there are reasons to be thankful on Thanksgiving Day 2016--an American thing--let it be that it is one of these things: This recount that will establish once and for all what happened and how it ever happened that one who won the popular vote by two million is about to lose the electoral college imprimatur come December 19 when that archaic college of electors meet.
Jill Stein: please save this day. Here is the news from Reuters:http://www.reuters.com/…/us-usa-election-recount-idUSKBN13J…

This grotesque 2016 US Presidential Election.

BAYANGGUDAW NOTES. 23 Nov 2016. WED. N1.
Quote, Unquote: This grotesque 2016 US Presidential Election.
Senator Bernie Sanders has said it right: the recently concluded US presidential election was grotesque. An impossible grotesque. A theatre of the absurd.
It looks like in the years to come, the Democrats will have to do a checklist of what error they have passed on as true, and this includes the painful truth that somewhere in the eight years of the Obama presidency, life has not turned out to be better for the average Americans.
We grant that Obama inherited an economy gone bad from Bush 2, and that the wars here-and-there had only made the industrialist of the war games richer and richer, but that, at day's end, is not an excuse for not doing better for the average American during the last 8 years.
In terms of political semiotics, Clinton candidacy extended the fearsome notion of continuing American oligarchy, with choices reduced to the same names. Never mind that Trump was not a better choice: it was that he promised a lot, and those are the promises that the disenchanted people wanted to hear.
Populist politics, they call this, and it happened in the Philippines, with the Duterte presidency proving the efficacy of that same abracadabra.
Now, this is what Sanders has said at a GQ interview:
"I think we expanded consciousness in terms of possibilities. What we basically did is ask a simple question: Why should we maintain the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality that we have? Why? Why are we allowing this country to drift into an oligarchy where a handful of billionaires are buying elections?"

The immigrant origin of Mr Donald Trump.

BAYANGGUDAW NOTES. 23 NOV 2016. N2.
The immigrant origin of Mr Donald Trump.
With Ilokano and Pangasinan-Cordillera roots and as an immigrant in the USA, I am now beginning to see more and more the wisdom in that American imagination of nation formation that regards inclusion as a virtue.
Couched in something simple but loaded with so much history, America as 'a nation among nations' must remain so if it wants to remain the model of freedom and democracy, of liberty and justice, and diversity and pluralism all over the world.
This leads me to the issue of Mr Trump's lopsided view of today's immigrant in America.
Himself coming from an immigrant background, we expect him to have the sensibility of an exile, or at least, the memory of one.
He might the second generation, with his grandfather a 16-year old immigrant at the the turn of the 19th century from a town of 1,200 people in Germany and ordered to be banished--to be exiled from his homeland--Mr Trump the grandson ought to remember Ellis Island and that poem about immigrant peoples seeking a new life in these United States.
This story of Mr Trump's grandfather banishment provides us a glimpse of his Weltanschauung about those who come to partake of what is left of the American Dream.
Read--and think and think through what Mr Trump can offer us. --

Thanksgiving, Mother of Exiles, and the Statue of Liberty.

BAYANGGUDAW NOTES. 23 NOV 2016. WED. N3.
Thanksgiving, Mother of Exiles, and the Statue of Liberty.
ELLIS ISLAND in the Hudson River is an enchanting place for me. Years ago, for a number of nights,
When I did an intensive training for a job on language testing, I would take the train from White Plains an hour away, and get off at the Central Station to find my way to that harbor closest to the island.
In the early evening hours, one would see the silhouette of that iconic articulation of a history that is now beyond the imagination and consciousness of triumphalist children and grandchildren of immigrants, many of them now holding positions of incalculable power, a power that is beyond the reach of ordinary immigrants like me.
I would sit there in the dark, and allow people to pass me by, and watch the tourists take a picture of that landmark in the middle of a vast body of water that leads to a vaster one, to the Atlantic.
In my mind is the theatre of immigrant life, the step-by-step procedure to finally calling it quits with one's homeland that could not offer anything but a dehumanized life.
How many of these made it here, and partook of the promises of the Golden Bull by the Wall Street, I do not know.
Once, an aunt who has lived most of her professional life in New Jersey offered me and my sister to bring me around by riding on those double-decked tourist buses that circled New York City and got past the Hudson to get to the other side where we had another view of this 'altar' of immigrant life.
Almost always, Emma Lazarus' words would ring in my ear, each syllable in the poem a syllable in my soul:
"Give me your tired, your poor,/ Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,/ The wretched refuse of your teeming shore./ Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,/ I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Mr Donald Trump must remember these words again.
He must remember too that he came immigrant ancestors.
